Dubai’s events scene has flourished in recent years. From West End shows to international rock stars, they’ve all been playing to packed houses. In this edition of Dubai Update, we explore how you can combine your winter sun holiday with some world-class entertainment.

Hit theatre shows regularly come to Dubai. Chicago and Joseph were just two that played in 2013 and Cirque du Soleil have already confirmed for 2014. If it’s laughs you’re after, top comedians such as John Cleese enjoy sold out performances.

The emirate is a regular destination for world music tours. Along with hundreds of world famous musicians, Florence and the Machine wowed the crowds in 2013 and Eric Clapton has already confirmed for March 2014. The Dubai Jazz Festival is in February and the Sandance music festival is held at Nasmi Beach at Atlantis, The Palm at various dates throughout the year.

While the UK freezes, Dubai’s winter sun means it has become a highlight on the golf and tennis tours, as well as hosting international cricket matches. It also boasts some famous sporting events in its own right. The Dubai World Cup Carnival culminates in the world’s richest day in racing and December’s Dubai Rugby Sevens attracted over 100,000 spectators.

2013 saw some of the world’s best entertainers perform in Dubai. Here were 5 of our favourites:

- Bruno Mars has sold 58 million singles and the star smashed it at the Dubai Amphitheatre in April.

- Teen sensation Justin Bieber played a sold-out concert at the Sevens Stadium in May.

- Funny man Michael McIntyre had them rolling in the ailses with his uniquely perceptive observational comedy.

- R&B royalty Alicia Keys returned to emirate as part of her ‘Set the World on Fire’ tour.

- The Killers brought their electro-rock set to the ever popular Sandance Festival at Atlantis, the Palm.
Dubai Shopping Festival (2 January – 2 February)
This retail extravaganza includes spectacular offers, competitions, fashion shows, concerts and a whole host more.

Cirque du Soleil (Until 14 January)
The world famous troop perform their amazing acrobatic routines to the music of Michael Jackson with spectacular results. For ticket information contact Gulf Ventures at .

Dubai Marathon (24 January)
The marathon in the desert attracts world class competitors and plucky amateur runners raising money for local and international charities.

Omega Desert Classic (27 January – 2 February)
This tournament has been won by Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Ernie Els and is sure to entice the golfing heavyweights in 2014.

Dubai Polo Gold Cup (1-15 February)
Dubai’s premier polo competition is played at the stunning Dubai Polo Club.

Dubai Jazz Festival (13-21 February)
There are some major names performing at this established festival including Santana and Jamie Cullum, as well as authentic jazz and blues

Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships (17 February – 1 March)
Many of tennis’s biggest stars have played in and won this tournament, including Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Venus Williams.

The pace of Dubai never lets up with exciting new events, exhibitions and sports meets being regularly announced. There are plenty of ways that you can keep up with the action.
