Polo, also known as ‘The Sport of Kings’, is a popular and glamorous spectator sport in horse-loving Dubai. Several top class tournaments are held at the Desert Palm resort including the Royal Salute Nations Cup and the Cartier International Challenge , where the dramatic desert landscape adds to the romance of the sport. This month, Dubai Update caught up with Karishma Chopra from Desert Palm to find out more.

What is the atmosphere like during one of the big polo matches?
It is sophisticated and electric during a polo match final. The spectators are very tense watching the rolling battle between some of the best players in the world as play switches from end to end. These matches are usually very high scoring and often are won in the dying seconds.

Why do you think the polo tournaments are so successful?
Desert Palm is the only polo estate with a hotel in the Middle East. This enables us to create an exclusive environment for our guests and players. It allows guests to choose from a variety of different locations to get the perfect viewpoint. This, combined with elegantly prepared food and beverages, creates a chic and relaxing experience for spectators.

Can a visit to the polo be accessible to all?
Polo is currently played 6 days a week at the property and an accessible way to enjoy a polo match is with our signature Jewel Afternoon Tea. This requires 24 hours' notice to arrange and the food and beverage team at Desert Palm will ensure guests are well looked after and can even arrange a special tour of the estate, grounds and stables.

Does Desert Palm still offer it’s guests the opportunity to try camel polo?
Yes! There is a minimum number of 15 guests required for this unique and fun experience and is usually combined with Jewel Afternoon Tea or a dinner after the guests have played.
Desert Palm is a 160 acres estate where there is a true sense of nature, outdoor space and relaxation that is unlike any other resort in Dubai. Guests can choose to do as little or as much as they like, including horse riding lessons, indulge in one of the many dining options on offer or pamper themselves at LIME spa.
