Dubai Update wishes all its readers a Happy New Year. We’d like to thank all our readers for making 2012 a great year for the emirate and hope that 2013 will be even more successful!

Dubai is truly flourishing as a cosmopolitan city on the world stage. A good reflection of this is the major sporting events that are now hosted in the emirate. This can be a great selling point to customers that are looking to combine their stay in the city with some top class tournaments. For this month’s edition, Dubai Update reports on the Dubai Rugby Sevens sponsored by Emirates, which was held over 3 days in November and December.

The competition is the second stop in the IRB Sevens World Series and attracts 16 international teams, as well as local and special guest players. Around 120,000 fans flew in from all over the globe and were treated to some thrilling rugby action at the purpose built stadium. Some excellent activities in the ‘Rugby Village’ were also on offer, including a spectacular rock concert on the Saturday night.

There was also a family-friendly aspect to the tournament, with the Air BP children’s stand specially designated for adults to bring their little ones along to enjoy the rugby in a safe and friendly environment. The crèche in the village was also popular, with the bouncy castle being a particular favourite!

In the end, it was Samoa who took top honours as they defeated New Zealand 26 points to 15. However, there was something for the Kiwi fans to cheer, as their Ladies team won the first ever Women’s Sevens event. Affordable Luxury Fam Trip

In December, Lorna Taylor of Dubai Tourism escorted 10 agents on an ‘affordable luxury’ themed fam trip to the emirate. The group flew with Virgin Atlantic and Skymax supplied the ground-handling, which included a fabulous 4x4 desert safari. Accommodation was provided by Rotana at the Amwaj Rotana and the Towers Rotana and stops on the itinerary included a visit to At The Top and the Aquaventure Waterpark at Atlantis, The Palm.

Kathryn Skeates from Co-operative Travel said, ‘Dubai was full of surprises, from the glitz and glamour of the shopping malls to the lovely beaches. But what amazed me most was the idea of selling Dubai as a twin centre destination either with city and beach or desert locations, or a combination of all three!’

Dubai Tourism Recipease Event

Dubai Tourism recently hosted a Recipease event with the tour operator If Only in Clapham. It was a chance for the agents invited to enjoy a fantastic cooking experience while learning about all the latest news and updates on Dubai.
